In the early part of the 19th Century mid-way along the bay in front of the Alverbank Hotel, there was a small pier which was used to transport bricks from the former Stokes Bay Brickworks situated on the land now occupied by Bay House School. In the nearby Stanley Park there is a large depression at the northern end and it was from here that the clay was excavated for making the bricks.
